| LATEST PAPERS AND COMMENTARY | Transplantation Direct (Open Access) In parallel with the obesity epidemic, liver transplantation for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is increasing dramatically in North America. Although survival outcomes are similar to other etiologies, liver transplantation in the NASH population has been associated with significantly increased resource utilization. Researchers sought to compare outcomes between live donor liver transplantation (LDLT) and deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) at a high volume North American transplant center, with a particular focus on resource utilization. READ MORE Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology Tumor morphological criteria for determining the appropriateness of liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma poorly estimate post-transplantation mortality. The aim of this study was to develop and assess the utility of a continuous risk score in predicting overall survival following liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma. READ MORE American Journal of Transplantation (Free to ILTS members via OVID) Transparency in clinical data has been identified as a driver of improved clinical outcomes in transplantation by many, including Porter. Transparency in this context includes the broad availability of outcomes data including clinical outcomes adjusted for risk, the costs of care and the experience of the center in providing those services, as a basis for comparing the "value" of healthcare services at various clinical centers. At the same time, and perhaps of greater importance, dramatic advances in transplant immunology and immunosuppression, microbiologic diagnosis and therapy, surgical techniques, organ procurement and allocation, and in clinical management of complex patients have been major forces in improved transplant outcomes. READ MORE American Journal of Transplantation (Free to ILTS members via OVID) Auxiliary liver transplantation (ALT) for hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver cirrhosis previously showed poor results, because the native liver was a significant source of HBV recurrence and the graft could be rapidly destroyed by HBV infection in an immunosuppressive condition. Four patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis were unable to undergo orthotopic liver transplantation because the only available grafts of left lobe were too small. READ MORE PLoS One (Open Access) This study was aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) level and mortality in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT). READ MORE Anesthesia and Analgesia Plasma transfusion remains the mainstay hemostatic therapy during liver transplantation (LT) in most countries. However, a large volume is required for plasma to achieve clinically relevant factor increases. Prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) is a low-volume alternative to plasma in warfarin reversal, but its efficacy has not been well studied in LT. READ MORE American Journal of Transplantation (Free to ILTS members via OVID) With 40 donors and more than 100 transplant procedures per million population in 2015, Spain holds a privileged position worldwide in providing transplant services to its patient population. The Spanish success derives from a specific organizational approach to ensure the systematic identification of opportunities for organ donation and their transition to actual donation and to promote public support for the donation of organs after death.
