International experts will convene to focus on immunosuppression management strategies and best practices in the consensus conference format. The consensus conference proceedings will be used to generate a practice guidelines manuscript for publication in Transplantation, official journal of the ILTS since 2015. READ MORE ILTS The premier U.S. meeting dedicated to anesthesia and critical care in liver transplantation will take place Friday, Oct. 21, at The Westin Chicago River North (320 N. The Liver Transplant Symposium National University Hospital in Singapore will host its second ILTS-endorsed multidisciplinary liver transplant symposium Friday through Sunday, Oct. 14-16. Building on the success of last year's meeting, this expanded program will feature expert-led workshops in transplant hepatology, liver transplant surgery and liver anaesthesia simulation. Transplantation (Free full text for ILTS members) Over 85 percent of U.S. centers adhere to practice guidelines that consider morbid obesity to be a contraindication to liver transplantation (LT). The relationship of morbid obesity with LT outcomes and survival benefit in the current era is unknown. Researchers investigated the association of BMI with waitlist and post-LT outcomes, and survival benefit, using the United Network for Organ Sharing registry. READ MORE Transplantation (Free full text for ILTS members) Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is an established indication for liver transplantation. This group is often allocated a donor after cardiac death (DCD) liver as a solution for waiting times. There are concerns that this approach may oncologically disadvantage HCC recipients. The aim of this study was to determine whether DCD transplantation was associated with poorer cancer-related survival in HCC. READ MORE Transplantation (Free full text for ILTS members) Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is common after liver transplantation (LT); however, few studies have examined the risk factors, clinical manifestations, and outcomes of CDI in this population. A retrospective study of adults who underwent LT between Jan. 1, 2011, and April 4, 2013, at The Mount Sinai Hospital was conducted. Potential risk factors were evaluated via univariate and multivariable analysis to determine predictors of CDI in this population. The clinical manifestations of CDI and patient outcomes were also reviewed. READ MORE Transplantation (Free full text for ILTS members) Biliary complications (BCs) remain an important cause of morbidity after pediatric liver transplantation. Technical factors have already been implicated in the development of BCs. Previous reports have associated the use of partial grafts, particularly living donor grafts, with a higher incidence of BCs. The aim here was to study the factors associated with the development of BCs in a large cohort of pediatric liver transplant recipients. READ MORE

Click here to see what else you missed. | American Journal of Transplantation In this editorial, the authors examine how an absence of ethical guidelines and regulatory framework have led to confusion in a recent donor intervention research trial, and why there is an urgent need for the Institute of Medicine and the Health Resources and Services Administration to provide researchers with guidance. READ MORE American Journal of Transplantation Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are common in patients awaiting liver transplantation, and both have a marked impact on the perioperative and long-term morbidity and mortality of liver transplant recipients. Consequently, researchers reviewed the epidemiology of AKI and CKD in patients with end-stage liver disease, highlighted strategies to prevent and manage AKI, evaluated the changing liver transplant waiting list's impact on kidney function, delineated important considerations in simultaneous liver–kidney transplant selection and projected possible future transplant policy changes and outcomes. READ MORE Liver Transplantation Different nonhypothermic preservation modalities have shown beneficial effects in liver transplantation models. This study compares controlled oxygenated rewarming to normothermic machine perfusion to resuscitate liver grafts following cold storage. READ MORE
